What do parents need to prepare when a kitten arrives at its new home?

Always seal the windows in your home before picking up your cat, and don’t take any chances about this. It’s a cliché, but I couldn’t resist writing it at the top as my biggest concern. Always seal your windows! Regular screens or diamond screens, as long as they are sealed, you can more or less avoid a share of the danger of cats falling.

I. Cat pick-up container

Prepare a suitable cat pick-up kit (cat bag/airline cabin/small metal cage/porous carton) and remember to cover the outside with a breathable cloth cover to prevent the cat from being frightened by the unfamiliar environment and to avoid blowing into the cool air. Choose a material with a strong and breathable bottom if possible, which will be useful when taking your cat to the hospital later.

2. Basic medical examination

The new cat’s medical examination at the hospital is usually an antibody test (to check if the vaccines are complete), biochemistry (to check for internal problems), faecal examination (to check for parasites), routine blood tests (to check for inflammation) and many other medical examinations. If financial conditions allow, a further film can be taken and a full PCR virus test can be done.

However, kittens need to adapt to their new home, so bringing them in immediately for a blood test may cause a stress reaction. It is advisable to observe the new cat’s appetite and faeces, and see the overall mental state before deciding when to take it for a check-up.

3. Cat litter box

Based on the principle of “one cat, one litter box”, choose a good location for the litter box, away from the food bowl, and do not move it frequently. When a cat arrives home, place the cat in the litter tray to familiarise it with the location and smell.

There are two main types of litter trays on the market, closed and open. The open type has a low stall, which makes it easy for cats to get in and out and is suitable for cats of all ages.

4.Cat litter

Cat litter is made from a variety of materials, including mineral sand, bentonite, pine sand, bean curd sand and crystal sand. Personally, I recommend mixing tofu litter with bentonite, which combines the advantages of both, good agglomeration, good odour coverage, strong water absorption and low dust. Cat litter is usually placed at 6cm, but for cats with special short legs or too young, urine clumping without sticking to the bottom is the standard.

5. Cat food

There are some differences in price, parents can choose according to their economic conditions, but it should be noted that no matter what season it is, cat food left open is prone to spoilage, eat less and more often, and the food bowl should be cleaned and dried after meals.

6. Clean water

The water should be purified or cooled to ensure it is clean and hygienic.

7, cat food bowls

Avoid plastic ones as far as possible in terms of material, which tend to make the cat’s black chin. Ceramic/glass/stainless steel bowls are recommended. If you are often away from home overtime, you can also prepare an automatic feeder. If the cat does not like its whiskers to be touched, a shallow bowl is suitable. On the contrary, for cats who often eat until they vomit in one gulp or who are particularly large eaters themselves, choose a food-blocking type of container.

8. Water bowls

Cats like flowing water. If conditions allow, you can choose some special drinking devices for them, and the cartridge of the automatic water dispenser can also filter the dirt. Remember to choose a stable structure that is not easy to spill, with a heavy bottom bowl and thick edges, so that it can prevent the cat from overturning the food bowl when picking up the water.

9. Cans

There are two types of cans: staple food cans and snack cans. It is recommended to feed snack cans sparingly to avoid cats developing picky eating habits that cannot be easily corrected. The main food cans for single cat families can be purchased in small cans of about 80G, which can be eaten at once.

10. Smaller snacks

It is recommended to choose dehydrated freeze-dried food with less food attractant added. Any snacks marked “not eaten and refunded” in a certain treasure shop need not be considered, as snacks are not essential.

11. Meat + goat’s milk

In addition to feeding kittens some cat food, you can also feed them some meat, but within 3 months, you should be careful not to feed them too much, as it is not good for their absorption and digestion. Cook some chicken breast and beef at home, brew milk powder or buy fresh goat’s milk from the supermarket to supplement the nutrition of the kitten’s developing body.

12. Cat litter

The types of cat litter include thick pads, boxes and hammocks, which can be combined with various factors such as season, temperature and temperature. Choose a type that is easy to move, so that it is convenient for us to clean up. Cats like to feel safe and often hide in closed and wrapped cardboard boxes or under the bed in corners such as the bottom of the sofa, which will make them feel very safe and comfortable.

13. Cat Climbing Frame / Pillar

Cats like to climb high places. A cat climbing frame can expand the space for cats to jump up and down, thus solving the problem of lack of exercise for cats, as well as allowing them to sharpen their paws on the sisal post of the cat climbing frame, sleep on the pedals, etc. It can create an independent space for cats to move freely and relax. Solid wood and rattan rope materials are recommended. Choose your own tier height according to your budget.

14. Cat scratching board

There are various materials such as corrugated paper, wood and sisal rope. Corrugated cardboard scratching boards are cheap and lightweight, but are prone to debris and breakage, while wooden scratching boards are very sturdy, but relatively expensive. Cat scratching boards are consumable and either type needs to be replaced regularly to avoid the accumulation of bacteria in the crevices.

15. DuPont Weicke disinfectant water

Many veterinary hospitals use Dupont Weicke brand disinfectant water, a bag at a time is very convenient, pink if faded is not effective, do not mix too big bottle at a time. Do not use 84 disinfectant at home, no matter how diluted, once the cat accidentally ingests it, the ingredients in it will easily cause liver poisoning.

16. Comb + jerking gloves

Short-haired cats generally use pin combs and row combs, and long-haired cats generally use shell combs/knot-clearing combs. In addition to its role in untangling hairballs and cleaning up shed hair, the comb can also promote metabolism and detect lice and skin diseases in time, and combing is also a form of physical contact between the cat and its owner.

17. Cat bathing gel + mouthwash

Cleaning is also very important. It is forbidden to use human soap/shampoo to bathe cats, which can have a great impact and damage to their fur. If you want your cat to be beautiful and healthy, choose a suitable bathing shampoo for your cat.

Your cat also needs to clean its teeth. If it is extremely uncooperative in brushing its teeth, consider commercially available edible cat mouthwash and just mix it into a bowl of water to drink.

18. Nail clippers

A nail clipper for cats.

19. Hair cream/cat grass/egg yolk

When cats lick their hair, some of the hair will be swallowed and the indigestible hair will gradually form hairballs in the cat’s stomach. Feeding hair melting cream can help cats to expel the hairballs and prevent them from vomiting due to irritation of the stomach. More natural hair melting foods include egg yolk and cat grass (grown from wheat seeds and classified as soil/hydroponic).

20. Toys

Cats are hunting animals. To enable them to move around more indoors and to have more opportunities for interaction between the pooper scooper and the owner, it is essential to purchase some cat toys. For example, cat teasers, multi-layer ball spinners, catnip, laser pointer, etc.

21. Household medication and health products

Medicine feeder, internal (external) wormer, iodine, ear wash, anti-inflammatory eye drops, amoxicillin, cat moss spray/medicated bath, tick removal spray, etc.

Intestinal probiotics, goat milk powder, taurine tablets, blood and liver essence, vitamin tablets, lysine, fish oil, nutritional cream, hairdressing powder, soft phospholipids, etc.

22. Camera

You can observe your cat’s movement at any time when you are out, and you can also talk to it, save the playback and return home in time to deal with any abnormalities found.

23. Elizabethan collar

The hard material traditional Elizabethan collar is stronger and acts as a fasting/anti-licking/anti-scratching collar when the cat is sick.

24. Weight scale

Convenient for observing changes in your cat’s weight. Generally speaking, for normal-sized cats, it is most standard for male cats to control around 9 kg and female cats to control around 7 kg as adults.

25. Patience.

It is inevitable that kittens will be uncomfortable at first when they go to a new environment, so parents do not need to rush to feed, tease and bathe their cats. If there are other indigenous people in the home, pay attention to isolating them for a period of time so that they can adapt to each other’s scent before making positive contact, so as to avoid the kittens being over-emotional and causing stress illness.
